The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a decisive step, terminating the central contract of fast bowler Haris Rauf following his refusal to participate in the Test series against Australia. Rauf’s decision to prioritize his stint at Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) over national duties led to the PCB’s action.
In a statement released on Thursday, the PCB announced the termination of Rauf’s contract effective from December 1, 2023. Additionally, the board stated that no No Objection Certificate (NOC) would be granted to Rauf for participation in any foreign league until June 30, 2024.
Efforts for reconciliation were made as Rauf was given the opportunity for a personal hearing on January 30, 2024. However, his response was deemed unsatisfactory by PCB management, leading to the contract termination.
Rauf, who represented Melbourne Stars in the BBL, opted out of the Pakistan team for the three-Test series against Australia held between December 14 and January 7. This decision sparked a standoff between Rauf and PCB, which was resolved with Rauf being allowed a limited appearance in the BBL before joining the national squad for a five-match T20 series against New Zealand in January.
Despite playing only one Test match for Pakistan, Rauf has garnered attention for his performances in limited-overs cricket. His refusal to join the Test squad without a justifiable reason or medical report was deemed a violation of the central contract by PCB.
The 30-year-old’s participation in the New Zealand T20 series was viewed as crucial preparation for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. Pakistan’s schedule includes a four-game T20 series against England in May followed by their World Cup campaign opener against the USA, co-hosts of the championship, on June 6.
